Our Story

Oakleaf at Home, is the newest social enterprise of mental health charity Oakleaf. Created to provide a supported work environment for people living with mental ill-health to take their first steps back into the workplace. Think of it as a safe environment to dip your toes into the workplace.

Did you know?

  • 43% of unemployed people have poor mental health
  • Over the next 3 years there could be 11% more mental health referrals every year costing between £1.1-£1.4 billion extra each year

We want individuals to be able to use the confidence and skills they gain from Oakleaf’s vocational training courses by being part of a working social enterprise. This not only helps to create structure in the day but also provides invaluable CV experience to carry forward.

At the heart of what we do is celebrate the creative talent of those who attend Oakleaf every day for training and support.

Our Artists

The greatest things are often right in front of us.
It is with great pleasure that we introduce to you some of our artists who helped make the Oakleaf At Home products so beautiful. We recognise amazing.

Why Working is so Important for Your Mental Health

Researchers from the University of Cambridge and University of Salford recently defined the recommended “dosage” of work for optimal wellbeing. One day of paid work a week – that’s just 8 hours – is all we need to get mental health benefits of employment.

We know how important work can be for our wellbeing and self-esteem but taking the first steps back into work can be daunting and bring on feelings of fear, anxiety and self-doubt. But, it can also be filled with excitement.

Oakleaf at Home is helping people living with mental ill-health work towards employment and experience the social inclusion, sense of purpose and financial benefits of working that no one should be excluded from.

Oakleaf Enterprise

We help over 500 people in the community every year.

Oakleaf has been helping the community to manage its mental ill-health since 1995.

The charity’s aim is to transform the lives and futures of adults managing their mental ill-health and help them secure the skills, confidence and training needed to return to the workplace. This pathway is delivered via three main focuses: Work-Related Training, Wellbeing Activities, and Counselling Services.

People with mental health needs have the second lowest employment rate of any disabled group with only 28.5% securing long-term work, and those with mental ill-health are more vulnerable to the negative effects of unemployment. Some people do recover, they respond well to treatment and medication without too much damage to their emotional, social and working life. Finding and keeping a job is an important aspect of the recovery and assuring the right support is vital.

Between April 2020 and March 2021 we delivered:

1023 Wellbeing sessions
1263 Counselling sessions
2357 Pandemic Check-In calls and received
1899 visits to our Safe Haven
